Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has uncovered links between the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and an ongoing financial corruption case involving senior officials of the same institution. Officials involved in the probe believe both cases are connected through a single organised network that had been operating within the college.
According to information from the investigation, the CBI is examining the roles of former principal Sandip Ghosh and three other senior officials—Ali Khan, Suman Hazra, and Biplab Sinha—who were reportedly close to him. All four are under suspicion for their alleged involvement in financial irregularities and are now also being investigated for possible connections to the rape and murder case. The CBI has termed these officials as collaborators in the financial scams uncovered earlier.
In August 2024, the Enforcement Directorate had arrested Sandip Ghosh on allegations of misappropriating crores of rupees during his tenure as principal of RG Kar Medical College. Following his arrest in the scam, Ghosh was later taken into custody in connection with the rape and murder case. The CBI has now begun examining whether both incidents are part of a larger network of organised criminal activities.
As part of the investigation, the CBI has analysed over 200 CCTV footage clips related to the incident and recorded statements from 12 new individuals. Some of the footage and testimonies have provided clues suggesting links between those accused in the financial irregularities and those involved in the rape and murder. These developments have led to a deeper probe into administrative functioning and internal connections at the college.
The CBI is currently pursuing both cases simultaneously and is investigating all angles to determine the extent of the alleged network. Officials are verifying whether those facing financial charges also played a role in enabling or facilitating the crime through misuse of position or other forms of complicity. The investigation remains ongoing, and further evidence is being collected.
